Description
The Breakers was the summer home of Corneliius Vanderbilt II. It is located on Ochre Point Ave., Newport, RI.
Built in 1893-1895 at a cost of 7 million dollars, it is estimated to be worth over $150 million dollars today. It sits on 13 acres overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Some of the 70 rooms were actually built in Europe and reassembled in America. It is an opulant home representative of the Guilded Age. The Great Hall celebrates progress in science, art, and industry by placing six limestone figures placed by the six doors that lead out of the room. The marble grand staircase leads to the second floor gallery of the hall.
