Description
Sandy Hook is a 1,665 acre barrier peninsula located on the coast of New Jersey. It boasts beaches on both the ocean and bay sides and is used for recreational activities. Henry Hudson discovered it in the 1600's. It is home to over 300 species of migrating birds. It is part of the Gateway National Recreation Area and is managed by the National Park Service. Now out of commission, Fort Hancock sits on the tip of Sandy Hook and houses the Sandy Hook Lighthouse.
