Description
Cherry trees are widely grown in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere and are the national flower of Japan. Typically they will survive for 16 to 20 years, blooming for about 14 days each spring. It is believed that these trees originated somewhere in Eurasia before migrating to Japan. Two hundred species of cherry trees are in existance. Japan sent the United States 3020 cherry trees in 1912 in order to celebrate the friendship between the two countries. Perhaps the most iconic place to see them is in Washington D.C. where there is an annual festival to celebrate their blossoms.
